Seriously?
On a more serious note, Wednesday marked the saddest day of my college career. It was my last flag football class, and since the kinesiology department didn't want it anymore the class is over. So after four straight semesters the run is over (ply you are not better than me). Football aside I will be heading to Vegas on Tuesday for my 21st birthday. Apparently Matt Leinhart is going to be having a "going to the NFL party" that night, in which case I will obviously attend. Anybody who has any suggestions for debauchery on my 21st should let me know. Even more, tomorrow will be an early morning for I will be tailgating for Red Bull Flugtag.

Happy Day
David Ortiz on his contract extension:
''I feel this is my house, and I've got to protect this house. This is not all about David Ortiz. This is about the group of guys that play together day by day. Whenever something happens to any of these guys, the whole Nation feels that.
I can feel that. I can see that. I can see as long as I've been here any time we walk away from a player or a player walks away from us, people feel that. I think our fans, they need to hear some good news, something nice coming through the organization. The past couple of years I think people were just getting annoyed with it. I'm pretty sure New England is going to take this as the good news. I want to finish my career as a Red Sox player."
Is this guy the biggest class act in sports, or what? With the possible exception of the speed skater who gave away all his Olympic money. It's good to know we can cheer for Big Papi for at least four more years.

There are two kinds of people (and three chords to every country song)
I have a little list I've been developing over the years called, "there are two kinds of people in this world"* It's a good way to make a blanket statement about something, and make a quick judgement of character based on something arbitrary. For example, there are two kinds of people, "Those who think the Beatles are better than the Rolling Stones, and those who don't," nobody's neutral on this one, and it says a lot about somedbody's personality depending on where they stand with this. I encourage you to come up with your own lists, it's easier than actually getting to know someone before judging them.
The other day I had an interesting development regardong my list. A friend of mine and I were watching 40-year-old virgin, and that scene came on where Steve Carrell's (sp?) character is having his girlfriend sell his action figures on eBay, and she says that she's getting a lot of money because they are in pristine condition. So I start telling the tragic story of how I gave another friend's little brother my Star Wars figures once I outgrew them, and then, when they became valuable, went back to reclaim them, but he had, of course, melted them down, or thrown them in a mud puddle or maybe made a diarama for school depicting the founding of West Tisbury by a Wookie selectman and a Storm Troooper whaling captain. Who knows what actually happened to the action figures, but now all I've got is an Imperial Guard with a few fingers missing. Sweet.
So my buddy counters my story with his own. It seems he used to get Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for his birthday every year, back when they were cool, pre Vanilla-Ice Secret of the Ooze era. But, just like the guy who gave me an Ice-T classical music album for high school graduation (Below Utopia: The Lost Score--yours for a very good price), this friend's parents didn't keep up with changing trends. So they kept giving him Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters for a year or two as they went the way of micro machines and muscle men before them. Anyways, he started liking the toys less and less, but didn't return them, or try and play with them out of a grwoing nostaligia/curiosity, instead he decided that he would keep them in their boxes instead of playing with them, a bold decision for a ten year old. And he still has them to this day, and is waiting for the right price to capitalize on what he calls "an investment" (if you're interested I'm going to have to ask for a 15% finder's fee, and demand you no longer tell others you and I are friends). I was blown away by the will-power, and calculating capitalism, that allowed him to hold off, when I would have tore that package open right then, and at least looked at the toys (by the way, I opened that Ice-T album, ruining the return option at Island Entertainment, and I can safely say Ice-T should stick to his glorious acting career.) So, there's another for the list of "two kinds of people", those who invest in toys, and those who play with them, and I have to say it kind of creeped me out hearing him break down his childhood calculations so coldly. Fin rambling.
*credit for this goes in part to Sam, who once made the wise remark, "you really can't like a girl who won't eat ice cream. She's got to get over that first." This has been changed into "I don't trust anybody who doesn't like ice cream, or puppies for that matter," and falls into the two kinds of people life rules, although not directly, since it's more a statement of personal position thatn a categorization of everyboy else. And for the record, any ice cream with banana flavor is always going to be disgusting, trust me on this one.

Hoops a la guatamalteco/pick-up's unofficial rules
First, in response to Bruce's query: Yes, there are some very ridiculous stories from when I played for Slayers and Santa Rosa, powerhouses of the Antigua, Guatemala Confederacion Deportiva League. Some of my favorites were when it would rain too hard and the town would flood, killing power in the middle of a game. Also, my friend Cam, a transplant from Maine, joined our team mid-season, and was constantly running into uniform difficulties. First, he had an official Slayers jersey, but couldn't play because his number was 16, and the league only allowed numbers up to 15. I asked why repeatedly, but was told by the officials that there was no reason, it was just league policy. Later, Cam was kicked out of a game for having pockets on his shorts. Of course, a kid on the other team had cargo shorts on, but we were told that his pockets were "sporting," so they were acceptable, whereas Cam's traditional pockets were not. I should probably add that my only pair of basketball shorts' drawstring had died by then, and I was using twine (literally) wrapped around the waist to hold them up. But this was not a problem for some reason. I could go on and on, but this got me thinking, what are the unspoken rules of pickup hoops. Here are a few to start:
1. No zone defense.
2. No three seconds.
3. You may wear an NBA or college jersey, but you may not wear it with accompanying shorts. You are not a paid athlete, leave the uniforms for them. Similarly, two accesories will suffice, no one needs to wear two wristbands, knee socks and a headband. Knee braces and other such support are excluded from this rule.
4. Offense calls fouls. If he doesn't call it and makes the shot, don't try and say you stopped play by fouling him first.
5. Only Steve can call it a "stinger."
Any other suggestions?

Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet! Tweeet
In what has to be a Cambridge YMCA playoff record, your 2006 Angry Fish rang up a combined 35 fouls in last evening's first round playoff loss. Their opponent? Twelve. FUCKING TWELVE. You don't have to be Tommy Heinsohn to comment on the absurdity of that ratio. Despite this ridiculousness, we only lost by 6 points. Making this all the more impressive and/or frustrating is that we went the last three minutes with FOUR players. Out of eight guys, four fouled out (5 fouls), three ended with four fouls and one ended with three.
Anyway, our season has come to an abrupt and unjust end. Thought you would like to know.
2006 Spring Session Angry Fish Final Record: 4-3*
*including bullshit piss cocklick balls on face playoff loss
ps: I'm sorry about the excessive capitalization. (It's the anger typing.)

Tough act to follow
But check this link out, and I think it's worthy. Pay attention to what the girl says at the end - "My... dream... come... true." And don't be thrown off by the last sentence it's safe for work.
I only get that excited when Papi does "yardwork" - Sam Mitchell.
Oh, and don't forget, you're the man now, dog.
