Let's talk about catchers

A maddening timeline has taken shape. Doug Mirabelli signs with Padres. Red Sox sign John Flaherty. Red Sox trade catching prospect Kelly Shoppach and others to Indians in exchange for Josh Bard and others. John Flaherty, after one of day of catching Wakefield's knuckleball, retires in spring training. Josh Bard beats out non-roster invitee Ken Huckaby for Wakefield knuckleball catching duty. Josh Bard fails miserably. Josh Bard is traded for .100 hitting catcher by the name of Mirabelli. Mirabelli returns to much fanfare. Mirabelli struggles at the dish. Josh Bard catches fire in San Diego. Wakefield gets injured, rendering Mirabelli's usefuleness to the team null and void. Last night Varitek gets injured and Kelly Shoppach hits a two-run double for the Indians. If Varitek is out for any stretch of time we will have our designated knuckleball receiver catching everybody but the knuckleball thrower. Perhaps we can trade for Eric Wedge.
